Are you considering purchasing a central air conditioner for your home or replacing an existing unit?
Considering this is a significant investment there are some things you may want to consider:
- Do you wish to purchase an Energy Efficient system? Energy efficiency is vital when considering a new air conditioner. Will you purchase a single stage or 2 stage unit?
To find out about the benefits of a 2 stage A/C unit click this link.
- SEER Rating (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating) The higher the number the more efficient the unit and the less it will cost to provide cooling.
- Is your compressor an efficient scroll type? Scroll (circular) compressors are more reliable and efficient than reciprocating compressors or Piston type compressors. Scroll compressors are both smooth and quiet! Visit the Lennox website to learn more about scroll compressors and their different stages.

Here’s a look at what qualifications your A/C Installer must have:
- Does the individual sizing the unit posses a valid journeyperson refrigeration mechanic license in the province of Saskatchewan? Journeyperson refrigeration mechanics are trained and qualified to size air conditioning systems
- Does the individual sizing your system have at least 10 years of experience in the industry sizing air conditioning systems?
- Bigger isn’t necessarily better. Bigger may cost more, use more energy, cycle on/off frequently and affect overall comfort.
- Considerations when sizing an air conditioning unit: size and age of the home, home’s design/layout, local climate, condition of ductwork, etc.
- Does the company installing the equipment carry Workers Compensation insurance for their employees, City Contractor’s license , Liability Insurance, Better Business Bureau rating?
Note: If personal working at your property are not covered by Worker’s Comp. then the homeowner is 100% responsible for any injury occurring while work is done at their property.
This comes to the important point of having a reputable contractor providing you with an honest quote.
A reputable contractor will:
- Come to your home and quote you accordingly
- Answer all of your questions, (did they provide you the opportunity to ask questions?)
- Offer a service contract
- Have your unit in stock (How long will you have to wait for your installation?)
- Year round support (service and maintenance)
- Be with a company that has been in business for at least 10 years
Note: Was the company representative the owner? Would you feel more comfortable if the owner who has a journeyperson refrigeration mechanic licensed showed up at your door to answer your questions and size your AC unit?
There are more things to consider than just a reputable contractor. You will want to be aware of the VALUE that the hired company will be providing you. Below are a few things to look out for.
Installation
- Wall mounted or ground mounted? Wall mounted minimizes ground trash and dirt. Is the foundation outcrop high enough to install a wall mount kit?
- Line set to be installed between the cooling coil (in furnace supply air duct) and the outside condensing unit. Can the run be easily installed or are their impediments like internal drywall ceilings where the lines must be installed above?
Noise
- Where do you expect to locate the outside air condenser unit? Will it be near a deck. Is noise created by the A/C unit going to be an issue? Lennox offers noise reducing options for their air conditioning units. The lower the DB sound rating the lower the noise level of the unit.
Warranty
- What is the manufacturer’s warranty for components, compressor and the heat exchanger? The warranty periods may vary depending on the model selected.
- Does the warranty cover both the equipment and related labor?
Promotions
- Are there any promotions or incentives for various products?
Apartments/Condos
- Mini Split Ductless System – Do you want to cool an apartment or condo? Possibly a mini split ductless A/C system might fit the bill.
As a consumer you are entitled to know your installer, the company they work for, the value and the ongoing relationship that you will have with your HVAC company. The more you know, the better!
