This Valentine’s Day, Treat Yourself To a Relaxing Bath

Turn the Bath Into a Self Care Spa This Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a time for sharing romance, affection, and appreciation with one’s sweetheart or significant other. But it’s equally important to show oneself some love and tender care as well. Taking some time to relax, recharge, and let the stresses of the world melt away can do wonders for one’s mental and physical health. Fortunately, one doesn’t even need to leave the house to be soothed and pampered – a simple bathroom can be transformed into a luxury resort spa with surprisingly little effort.

Different Kinds of Bathtubs

The majority of homes today feature fairly basic bathtubs made from acrylic or fibreglass. Smaller bathrooms typically have a combination shower/bath in a shallow alcove. While not ideal for long soaks due to their limited size, these are great in a pinch for a candlelit bubble bath. But in a master bath with adequate space, a separate shower and soaking bathtub is the way to go for those who want a more luxurious experience.

Soaking tubs come in many shapes and sizes, but they are generally much larger than standard bathtubs, especially in terms of depth. Some are even large enough to accommodate two bathers at once. From alcove tubs to stylish freestanding models or the classic clawfoot design, soaking tubs are a simple but elegant option for the avid bath-taker. Whirlpool tubs and air tubs feature water or air jets designed to gently massage major muscle groups during a soak. Some models even combine the two options for greater control.

Bathtime Stress Relief – Chromatherapy, Aromatherapy, and Music Therapy

Various sensory therapy methods, often used in resort spas and by holistic health care practitioners, are becoming more popular and accessible for home use. Bathtub manufacturers are even integrating these practices into their tub designs for a more comprehensive and relaxing bathing experience

Chromatherapy involves the use of coloured lighting – inside and/or above the tub – to stimulate certain brainwave patterns for desirable effects. There are particular colours that promote relaxation, cheerfulness, reduced anxiety, peace of mind, and even increase circulation.

Aromatherapy is known to reduce stress along with numerous other health benefits. It is often achieved using essential oils, incense, or bath bombs, but some newer tubs feature built-in scent diffusers to safely deliver therapeutic aromas via underwater air jets.

Many new tubs have built-in sound systems with waterproof digital controls for a completely immersive listening experience in the bath. The therapeutic effects of being totally enveloped by the sound of one’s favourite music can be highly beneficial.

Not a Bath Person? Make the Shower Just as Relaxing!

Long baths aren’t for everyone, of course, and for some people, singing in the shower counts as music therapy. Luckily, the innovations in luxury and relaxation aren’t confined to the bathtub. Newer showers can be equipped with gravity showerheads that simulate rainfall or powerful handheld massaging showerheads.

Smart showers offer precise temperature and pressure control for a personalized touch, and many have music playback capabilities with built-in Bluetooth speakers. Some can be installed with custom lighting to reap the benefits of chromatherapy in the shower. Many modern shower enclosures, aside from being beautifully designed, are built with spacious benches for those who may want to take a load off and simply bask in the steam.

Whether it’s in a bathtub or a shower – or both – there are countless ways to enhance the comfort and enjoyability of the bathing experience. Some require more intensive overhauls than others, so it’s always a good idea to consult with a trusted plumber before making a decision.
